LEADER IN TRANSFER

Gabriele

Gabriele Simonti
[ITALY

Gabriele Simonti is a Psychology major and competes for OCC men’s water polo. As an international student athlete, who must attend school full time, he finds OCC athletics to be supportive from the very beginning.

“When one of my friends recommended me OCC, I immediately looked up the campus and contacted the men’s water polo coach.  He was super nice and showed me what class to take and helped me a lot,” Simonti said. Now he is a captain of the team, and has made great friendships with his team mates.

“It’s a big thing for me to be a captain and getting to know guys in the team was easy. The difficulties was more like the process to get here and get paper work done but Global Engagement Center and even the coach helped me,” he said.

He also stresses the importance of excelling academically and OCC make things very easier for athletes.

“People think it’s hard to be both a full-time student and an athlete but you just have to be organized. Lots of times, professors are very supportive for athletes. Even a tough class like English 101, my professor understood my situation and even offered to help me during their office hours,” he said.

He also mentioned that how proud of himself being an OCC student.

“Being part of this big community and playing water polo as a captain for this school is something I should be proud of myself,” he said.

California State Univeristy Associate Degrees for Transfer

OCC more than 130 programs lead to associate’s degree, certificates and transfer to 4-year universities.

Aoi

Aoi Aihara
[Japan

Dance major Aoi Aihara started ballet at age 3.

When she first arrived to U.S., she encountered many challenges international students experience such as adjustment and culture shock.

“When I first came here, I was shy and did not say anything in class…[Unlike in Japan], in America you have to sell yourself.”

Since then, Aoi has overcame many of

these challenges and developed the

confidence to audition for major

dance roles.

              She performed a contemporary

              solo piece at an HIV/AIDS

              charity event at OCC.

“A former student came to class to audition students and I got a solo part!”.

She describes the dance program as one of the best and most enriching programs at OCC.

Dance, Dance, Dance

“I have a lot of opportunities to

perform at OCC and outside of the

school. We also go to high schools

nearby to inspire students with our

dance piece and tell them what is

like to be a college student,”

she said.

She also has performed at the NPO event in Orange County.

In addition, she stresses the importance of connecting with her professors on a personal level.

“Professors are very nice. They help me grow as a dance and also as a person,” she said.

She keeps prospering for her future dream to be a professional dancer.

“I want to transfer to university to get bachelor degee,” she said.

“Aoi graduated from OCC in Spring 2018 and was accepted to UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount University”.

Viktoriia

Viktoriia Vasilyeva,

Viktoriia is an economics major and involved in numerous extracurricular activities at OCC.

She has been involved in ASOCC (Associated Student of Orange Coast College) since her first semester and currently serves as a Student Senator.

“Being part of ASOCC, I meet a lot of people. It is just a good way to develop new-working and socializing and also in leadership skills,” Vasilyeva said.

As an ASOCC Student Senator, her advocacy is to build a stronger campus community and find ways to better connect students. She is currently developing a student mentorship program for the college.

“I want to students to know what services can be available to them and how can they access to it,” she said.

One of her most memorable moments at OCC was an interaction she had with OCC’s President Dr. Dennis Harkins.

“I was sitting right next to the President of Orange Coast College [at a conference] and we talked casually about cameras [and learned that he is an avid photography in his spare time].”

OCC offers more than 60 student clubs from honors societies, cultural clubs, and leisure clubs. Every year "club rush" (featured in the background) is an opportunity for students to promote their clubs and recruit new members.
